The Colonel’s Vineyard Harvest 2024
Early on the morning of Wednesday October 2, 2024 we began our 18th consecutive harvest of The Colonel’s Vineyard. With the enviable position at the top of our property, it is a small, 1 ¼ acre block planted to clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon that is exclusively used to produce a very special wine that bears The Colonel’s name.
Within 4 hours, Calluna’s founder and winemaker David Jeffrey and the crew had successfully harvested a bountiful crop of 5.5 tons of grapes. The bins full of fruit were loaded up on the back of a flat-bed truck to begin their journey to our winemaking facility in Santa Rosa, approximately 20 minutes away.
David vinifies the Cabernet Sauvignon from this block utilizing the barrel fermentation process that he learned from Alain Raynaud while working at Chateau Quinault in St. Emilion. Over the years, the vinification for this wine has slowly evolved so that now about one half of the wine is barrel fermented, and one half is fermented traditionally in tank.
